Menopause Formula’s Star Ingredients
Hormone Balancing Nutrients: Dong Quai, Flaxseed extract, Sage Extract, Hops Extract & B6
In our quest to create a balanced and effective menopause supplement, we've turned to the power of both nature and science. Dong quai, flaxseed, sage and hops extracts, and vitamin B6 are some of the premium plant extracts and vitamins we've chosen, each playing a role in supporting hormonal activity during menopause. Dong quai, often referred to as 'female ginseng', has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to address a range of reproductive issues. Modern research suggests it may help to alleviate menopausal symptoms by balancing oestrogen levels (1). Sage Extract has been long revered for its therapeutic properties. One study found that daily sage supplementation reduced both the frequency and severity of hot flashes over eight weeks (2). Whilst hops extract contains 8-prenylnaringenin, a compound with potent oestrogenic activity. Research indicates that it might offer an effective natural alternative for managing menopause symptoms, including sleep disturbances (3). Vitamin B6, though not a plant extract, is an essential nutrient that helps regulate hormonal activity too. It's also involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters that control mood, potentially alleviating menopause-related mood swings and depression (4). Together, these ingredients provide a synergistic approach to supporting hormone balance and regulation during menopause.
Phyto-oestrogens: Flaxseed Extract
Flaxseed Extract is another integral ingredient in our menopause supplement. It's an exceptional source of plant 'phyto-oestrogens', or dietary lignans, that can mimic the effects of oestrogen in the body. During perimenopause and menopause, the body's natural oestrogen levels decline, leading to a variety of symptoms. Flaxseed extract can potentially counteract this by supplying the body with a natural source of oestrogen, thus helping to restore hormonal balance. This mechanism can be particularly effective in managing common menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes too. Scientific studies support the potential of flaxseed in managing menopause symptoms. One study found that consuming flaxseed could decrease hot flash frequency and severity and improve mood and quality of life in postmenopausal women (5). Flaxseed also helps us to eliminate any excess in hormones, supporting gut health too. Thanks to its many benefits, it was an important ingredient to include in our Formula.
Adrenal Support: KSM66® Ashwagandha + Rhodiola
Two stellar adaptogens in our menopause supplement are KSM66® ashwagandha and rhodiola, both scientifically acknowledged for their capacity to improve mood, enhance sleep quality, and calm anxiety, thereby supporting adrenal health and discouraging 'burn out'. Ashwagandha, known for its stress-relieving properties, has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. The KSM66® ashwagandha in our supplement is a full-spectrum extract that maintains the complexity of the plant while providing a potent dose of its active compounds. Studies show us that ashwagandha supplementation effectively improves sleep quality and can be a practical solution for the sleep problems associated with menopause (6). Rhodiola, another well-known adaptogen, has been studied for its role in reducing mental fatigue, improving cognitive functions, and uplifting mood. Rhodiola has been shown to reduce symptoms of stress, such as fatigue, anxiety, and exhaustion, contributing to improved overall wellbeing (7). This combination of KSM66® ashwagandha and rhodiola in Menopause Formula provides a holistic approach to managing menopausal symptoms by reducing stress, enhancing mood, promoting sleep, and restoring adrenal health, vital factors that contribute to a balanced menopausal transition.
Anti-inflammatory Support: Rosemary Extract & Turmeric Extract
Rosemary extract, containing a potent 30% ursolic acid, is another key ingredient in our menopause supplement, delivering significant benefits, particularly in terms of memory enhancement and overall body inflammation reduction. Ursolic acid, has been acknowledged for its powerful antioxidant properties. One study found that ursolic acid could protect against cognitive impairment, demonstrating its potential to enhance memory (8). This becomes increasingly relevant during menopause, a time when cognitive changes and memory lapses may be experienced. Moreover, ursolic acid is known for its potent anti-inflammatory effects, thereby reducing inflammation throughout the body (9). This is important during menopause as systemic inflammation can exacerbate common symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. Turmeric extract, specifically its active compound curcumin, is another powerful ingredient that can help reduce inflammation. It's traditionally been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Studies support its anti-inflammatory properties and use to improve digestion also (10). It also has diuretic properties, which can help to reduce water retention and bloating. In combination, rosemary and turmeric can help assist not only in the mitigation of menopausal symptoms, but also in supporting overall health and wellness whilst reducing any inflammation.
Energy Support & Brain Function: B-vitamin Blend & Choline
Our specially formulated Menopause Formula contains a powerful blend of B-vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, folate) and choline, specifically designed to combat feelings of tiredness and fatigue while promoting enhanced cognition. B-vitamins are essential for the healthy functioning of the nervous system, energy production, and the synthesis and repair of DNA and RNA (11). Their role in the body's metabolism and energy production explains their ability to alleviate feelings of tiredness and fatigue. Meanwhile, folate and B12 are known to support brain health, with some research suggesting they may slow cognitive decline (12). Choline, another vital nutrient, supports brain and nerve function. Studies suggest that high choline intake is associated with better cognitive performance (13). Furthermore, it plays a role in maintaining the integrity of cell membranes and synthesising neurotransmitters, essential for memory and mood regulation. The combined action of this B-vitamin blend and choline provides a potent energy boost and cognitive enhancement. These ingredients help combat common complaints of fatigue and brain fog during menopause, empowering you to remain alert, focused, and energised throughout your daily activities.
Polyphenol-rich Antioxidants: Goji & Bilberry Super Berries
Goji and bilberry are hailed as super berries for a reason - they are powerhouses of antioxidants, particularly polyphenols, and have a host of health benefits that make them an integral part of our menopause supplement. Goji berries, native to Asia, have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to enhance energy and longevity. Goji berries are a rich source of carotenoids and vitamin C, both powerful antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress. Moreover, the berries were found to be effective in boosting energy, cognitive performance, and gut health while also offering protective benefits to the skin (14). Bilberries, on the other hand, are known for their high content of anthocyanins - a type of polyphenol. Anthocyanins are praised for their potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Anthocyanins help fight premature ageing and maintain skin health by neutralising harmful free radicals. Furthermore, a study highlighted anthocyanins' role in enhancing cognition and overall brain health too (15). When these two super berries come together, they offer a blend of antioxidants that not only energise the body and mind but also provide crucial support to gut health. Additionally, these antioxidants feed the skin, helping it retain its youthful glow and fight the signs of premature ageing. Goji and bilberry super berries in our menopause supplement offer a myriad of benefits that support your wellbeing during this transitionary phase of life. So, you can feel vibrant and energised while nurturing your mind, gut, and skin.
Fatigue & Thyroid Function: Iron, Iodine, Siberian Ginseng, B6, B12 & Magnesium
Each ingredient in our menopause supplement has been carefully selected to offer comprehensive support during this phase of your life. Iron, iodine, Siberian ginseng, B6, B12, and magnesium play key roles in maintaining mental clarity and boosting energy. Iron is essential for the production of haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. Iron deficiency can lead to fatigue and cognitive impairments, highlighting the importance of iron for mental clarity and energy levels. Iron and iodine both contribute to thyroid hormone production, which regulates metabolism and energy production. A study found that insufficient iodine intake could lead to tiredness and difficulty concentrating (16). Siberian ginseng is an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body adapt to stress. A study found that it could improve mental performance during stressful situations and enhance energy levels (17). Vitamins B6 and B12 are vital for the health of your nervous system and brain function. A review highlighted the role of B-vitamins in energy production, suggesting they could help fight fatigue and maintain mental clarity (18). Finally, magnesium is an essential nutrient as it supports over 300 enzymatic reactions, including those involved in energy production. It’s difficult to obtain enough through diet alone whilst stress increases our need further, therefore supplementing is recommended. Studies suggest that magnesium could improve physical performance, brain function, and mood (19). By providing these essential nutrients, our menopause supplement supports your mental clarity, thyroid function, and energy levels during this transformative period of life.
The Female Microbiome: Vegan Probiotics
Our menopause supplement not only focuses on hormonal balance and mental clarity, but also seeks to support your gut health and female microbiome, crucial but often overlooked components of overall wellness. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that live in our gut. They play an integral role in our overall health, including digestive function, immunity, and even mental health by balancing the gut microbiota, which can often be disrupted during menopause due to hormonal changes. Menopause Formula includes species of probiotics that have been studied more extensively for their specific benefits to women's health. For example, bifidobacterium bifidum plays a significant role in maintaining vaginal health by acidifying the vaginal environment, preventing the overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria and yeast (20). It's also known to enhance immune response and support gut health. Another strain we have included is bifidobacterium longum, which is one of the most prevalent species in our gut microbiota and is known to improve gut health, reduce inflammation, and enhance the immune system. Studies also suggest a role in alleviating psychological stress and improving memory (21) – both commonly experienced during the menopause. Finally, Bacillus sporogenes, can help manage irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms, such as bloating (22). Combined, these probiotics play a unique and important role in maintaining women's health by supporting gut health, immune function, mental wellbeing, and maintaining the balance of the vaginal microbiota.
Liver Support & Detoxification: Milk Thistle, N-Acetyl Cysteine & Choline
The liver, a powerhouse organ, plays a significant role in detoxification, digestion, energy storage, and hormone regulation. During menopause, women's bodies undergo significant hormonal changes which put extra stress on the liver. To assist in this transition, our supplement contains milk thistle, N-Acetyl cysteine (NAC), and choline - ingredients known to support liver health and detoxification while also boasting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Milk thistle has been traditionally used to support liver health, thanks to its active ingredient, silymarin. Studies show that silymarin exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic properties that contribute to liver protection and support (23). N-Acetyl cysteine (NAC), an amino acid derivative, is a potent antioxidant that can neutralise harmful free radicals in the body. It also plays a crucial role in the synthesis of glutathione, one of the body's most potent antioxidants. NAC can protect against oxidative stress and inflammation, which are key in liver function and detoxification (24). Lastly, choline is a vital nutrient involved in various bodily functions, including liver health and detoxification. Together, milk thistle, N-Acetyl cysteine, and choline can support your liver's detoxification processes, reduce inflammation, and protect your body from oxidative stress during menopause, helping you feel energised and vibrant.
Alkalising Effects: Supergrasses (Barley Grass)
"Supergrasses," a term often used to describe grasses like wheatgrass and barley grass are becoming increasingly popular in nutritional circles for their wealth of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and chlorophyll. These grasses are touted for their alkalising effect on the body, helping to balance pH levels that can become disrupted due to the modern diet high in processed and acid-forming foods. Barley grass, like wheatgrass, contains a range of essential nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and bioactive compounds. It also has the ability to neutralise harmful substances, thanks to its antioxidant capacity, supporting cellular health (26). Since supergrasses are a concentrated source of nutrients that offer an alkalising effect on the body, contributing to a healthy internal environment, we felt it was important to include barley grass in Menopause Formula.
Immune Support: Vitamins C, D & Zinc
Vitamins C, D, and zinc are all integral to the optimal functioning of the immune system and the protection of our cells against the damaging effects of oxidative stress – a phenomenon that can be exacerbated by the demands and pressures of modern life. Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a potent antioxidant that protects our cells from the harmful effects of free radicals - unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress leading to inflammation. Vitamin C is also known to stimulate the production and function of white blood cells, which are essential for an effective immune response. Vitamin D, known as the 'sunshine vitamin', has shown to modulate both innate and adaptive immune responses. A deficiency in vitamin D is associated with increased susceptibility to infection. Zinc is a trace element necessary for immune cell development and communication and plays a crucial role in inflammatory response too. However, zinc deficiency affects around 2 billion people worldwide (25), leading to impaired immune function, making this an important mineral to supplement. Together, these micronutrients play a critical role in supporting our immune system and protecting our cells from oxidative stress. It's crucial, especially in today's high-stress world, to ensure we get adequate amounts of these nutrients through appropriate supplementation on top of dietary intake.
